Body Dysmorphic Disorder Treatment

Body Dysmorphic Disorder is a disorder in which people cannot stop thinking about their perceived flaws in their physical appearance. To others this flaw is either minor or nonexistent. Their perception about their appearance may lead to such shame, anxiety and despair that they begin to avoid social situations. They may obsess over their appearance and body image looking in a mirror and spend additional time grooming. Issues regarding body image can be very impairing. They may seek out others reassurance and seek out cosmetic surgeries or other cosmetic treatments to fix the flaws that are unnecessary and provide only temporary relief.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder treatment involves Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and often medication. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy will focus on learning how negative thoughts, emotions and behaviours maintain the problem.

You will learn more realistic thinking about your body image. You will also learn how to manage urges to reduce reassurance seeking and checking. Some medications may help control certain symptoms.
